Lord Krishna is offered puja on the day of Janmashtami.

Every year in the day of Gokul Ashtami, Krishna Janmashtami is held. For the Hindus, Lord Krishna is the re-incarnation of Lord Vishnu the preserver.  Janmashtami is held in different parts of the country.

It is the date of birth anniversary of Lord Krishna.  The life span of Lord Krishna is dated according to legend around 3228 BCE to 3102 BCE. He was the eighth son of mother Devaki and father Vasudeva. Kanghsha, the elder brother of Devaki became a tyrant.

Under the boon of Lord Shiva, he could not be defeated by anyone in the world other than the 8th son of Vasudeva and Devaki. When Kanghsha heard this information, he went on killing all the children of Devaki and Vasudeva one after the other in a prison in Mathura.

Firstly he kept both Devaki and Vasudeva in prison. At the same time he ensured that none of the children of Vasudeva and Devaki would have survived.

The moment, Lord Krishna was born, his father Vasudeva carried him on head on a rainy night and reached him to Gokul in the house of Nanda and Yashoda. Lord Krishna grew up and then killed his mama Kanghsa. During the teenage of Lord Krishna, Kanghsa left no stones unturned to get him killed. He send Putana to give poison and kill Lord Krishna. But all those efforts went in vain.

In Mahabharata written by Vyasdev, there are historical mentions about the works of Lord Krishna. The greatest teaching of Lord Krishna is mentioned in Bhagwat Gita. It is the holy text of the Hindus. In that book, Lord Krishna delivered the great lecture of karma to Arjuna in the Kurukshetra battle. He said, a human being has to do his or her karma. He or she should not worry about the results of the karma.

Every year on the day of birth anniversary of Lord Krishna Hindus worship the idols of Lord Krishna. Women give beautiful alpona with rice husk. Then they decorate the idol of Lord Krishna. Many Hindus provide new clothes to the idols. Lighting is done in many houses.

On the day of Janmashtami, the Hindus chant vedic mantras like “he Krishna karunasindhu dinabandhu jagatpathe, gopesha gopikakanto radhakanto harohare”, “shrikrishna govinda hare murare henath Narayan vasudeva”. The idol of Lord Krishna is provided flowers and fruits and arati is done with camphor, agarbati, dhuno.

In the battle of Mahabharata, Lord Krishna backed the Pandavas. The reason he did so was because he said one always should be on the side of dharma. The pandavas including Yudhisthira, Bhima, Arjuna, Nakul and Sahadeva were on the side of dharma. Where as the Kauravas including Duryodhana, Dushshashana were on the side of adharma. Lord Krishna asked Arjuna to throw his arrow on Karna when his chariot got stuck in mud. When Karna said he could not be hit in that away as it was against the rules of warfare, Lord Krishna replied that when Karna killed Abhimanyu in Chakravuha, seven warriors killed one soldier. It was also against rules of warfare. So when one never did equity, he did not do equity he did not deserve equity. So Arjuna listened to Lord Krishna and killed Karna with bow and arrow.

Lord Krishna always the path of dharma. The stories of Lord Krishna are made in television in serial Lord Krishna and Mahabharata and also film Mahabharata.
